Exhaustive engineering, holistic design, and real-world testing. It all comes together with the Propel aero road bike. The result? Race wins. Lots of them.
Built to win
The Propel Advanced SL has carried top pros like Dylan Groenewegen and Michael Matthews of Team Jayco-AlUla to some of the biggest wins in their careers. With scores of victories—in sprints and in breakaways—it’s the choice for riders who are ready to attack. These riders played a key role in the development of the Propel Advanced SL, which is 225g lighter and 9.2 percent stiffer than the previous generation. Whenever speed matters most—against the wind, against the clock, against competitors—this is your advantage.
AeroSystem Shaping Technology
The guiding design principle with the Propel range is AeroSystem Shaping Technology. It’s a process that can be viewed as a sum of all parts. It’s analyzing every tube, junction, angle and component—both individually and, more critically, as a system by simulating real-world riding conditions. The engineering team starts with airflow simulation software called computational fluid dynamics (CFD). After all the numbers are crunched, physical forms are created. Then comes wind-tunnel testing, followed by the final step, which is to produce sample bikes and test them on the road with pro athletes.
Key features of the Propel range
Truncated ellipse airfoil shapes are used in the down tube, seat tube and seat stays. Working with renowned aerodynamicists at the GST wind tunnel in Germany to accurately simulate real-world riding conditions, a dynamic mannequin was used to analyze the aerodynamic factors of not just the bike, but rider and bike together. This process most accurately replicates the effects of a rider pedaling against various wind speeds and angles.
The frameset is part of the story, but not the whole story. The proprietary Contact SLR Aero handlebar and stem also reduce drag, as do the CADEX 50 wheels and CADEX Aero tires found on the flagship Propel Advanced SL. When comparing the complete new Propel Advanced SL bike to the previous generation, the new model improves aerodynamic drag by 6.21 watts. This equates to a savings of 27 seconds over 40km at 40kph.
