Dumoulin Extends Giro Lead With Summit Stage Win!
Team Sunweb rider Tom Dumoulin took another huge step in his bid to win the Giro d’Italia with a stunning Stage 14 victory atop the Oropa climb. Dumoulin’s second stage victory of this Giro, following his dominating Stage 10 time trial win, strengthened his hold on the leader’s pink jersey and confirmed his position as one of the sport’s top all-rounders of the moment.
“I really didn’t expect this,” said Dumoulin after his win on the TCR Advanced SL team bike. “It’s something I had always dreamed about but I didn’t think I could do it."
Dumoulin, wearing the maglia rosa leader’s jersey and his Giant Rev helmet, was well protected by his Sunweb team in the approach to the final climb. Riding up Oropa at his own pace, he reeled in an attack from GC rival Nairo Quintana and beat out Ilnur Zakarin and Mikel Landa at the finish to win the 131km stage from Castellania to Oropa. The stage win gave him additional time in the general classification, and he now leads Quintana by 2:47 (second) and Frenchman Thibaut Pinot by 3:25 (third).
“It was a really tough climb and when I couldn’t follow Quintana I remained focused, relaxed, and rode at my own pace,” Dumoulin said. “At the end I still had something left, it was incredible.”
Dumoulin and his teammates will face more challenges ahead as the Giro moves into its final week. “It’s a good advantage to go into the last week with but we will see how things go, and the last week will be much different,” he said. “It’s still a long way to Milan.”
