Team Sunweb Signs Taiwan National TT Champ Sergio Tu
Sergio Tu, the 2016 elite men’s time trial champion in Taiwan, has signed a deal to join the Team Sunweb Development squad for 2018. Considered one of the top young road racing talents to emerge from Giant’s home country of Taiwan, Tu has been racing Giant bikes for several years, including 2016 when he raced with the Denmark-based Giant-Scatto UCI Continental team.
Tu, who this year finished 5th in the men’s Under-23 time trial at the Asian Road Cycling Championships, has been loosely connected with the Team Sunweb organization for the past several years. With the help of Giant, the team’s official technical partner, Tu was first introduced to Team Sunweb coaches in 2014. The teenager’s talent and ambitions made him a perfect match for Team Sunweb’s mission of developing young talent, so they helped guide him toward his first European racing experiences.
“Giant Taiwan gave me an opportunity to go to The Netherlands and meet with Team Sunweb CEO Iwan Spekenbrink and coach Marc Reef,” Tu said. “That was the most important thing that has happened to me in my cycling life. After that, they helped to support me with coaching suggestions. In 2015, I raced and trained in Holland with [Team Sunweb coach] Rude Kemna’s club team. In 2016, I joined Team Giant-Scatto. I’m very thankful for family, Giant, and all the people who support my dream to race at the professional level.”
Tu’s upward trajectory also fulfills a mission at Giant to help develop young riders and support them at various levels. Some well-known examples include seven-time Colombian downhill national champion Marcelo Gutierrez, who started racing with Giant at the local and regional level in South America, and 2017 Giro d’Italia champion Tom Dumoulin, who started racing with Giant through the Team Sunweb program at age 22 four years ago.
“Giant is always working to help athletes achieve their dreams and compete at the highest level, from developing the bikes and gear that give them a competitive edge, to supporting them along the way,” said Giant Chief Branding Officer Phoebe Liu. “And as a global brand with roots in Taiwan, we are proud to be an integral part of Sergio’s journey to compete at the highest level of cycling.”
