Dumoulin Takes Over Giro Lead With Stage 10 TT Victory!
Team Sunweb rider Tom Dumoulin took over the lead of the Giro d’Italia with a dominating ride in Tuesday’s Stage 10 time trial. Riding his Trinity Advanced Pro TT bike and wearing the Giant Rivet TT aero helmet, he won the 39.8k time trial in Montefalco convincingly and put major time on many of his key rivals for the general classification.
Dumoulin clocked a time of 50:37, beating second-place finisher Geraint Thomas by 49 seconds and taking over the pink leader’s jersey with an advantage of 2:23 over previous race leader Nairo Quintana. Dutch rider Bauke Mollema now sits third overall in the GC.
Wearing the maglia rosa is a familiar feeling for Dumoulin. He also led the Giro last year and wore the jersey for six days.
“Now it’s not a coincidence anymore,” said Dumoulin, who has worked hard over the past couple years to improve his climbing and become one of the world’s best all-around stage racers. “Now I can fight with the best and that’s a nice feeling. We’ll fight to the end now. We’ll see how much my gap is worth in the mountains but for now it’s nice to have the pink jersey.”
The Giro continues with Stage 11 on Wednesday, a hilly 161km stage from Firenze to Bagno de Romagna that features four categorized climbs. The three-week grand tour concludes May 28 in Milan.
