Bling Strikes Again! 2nd Straight Win For Matthews
Micheal Matthews struck again on Sunday, capturing a second straight WorldTour win in Canada for Team Sunweb. The Australian sprinter followed up his win on Friday at the Grand Prix Cycliste de Québec with a second Canadian victory, this time at the Grand Prix Cycliste de Montréal.
Following a similar script from Friday, Matthews worked hard to stay in contention in the 195km circuit race, benefitting from a solid team effort throughout the day. And this time he looked even more dominant in the finishing sprint, wearing the Giant Pursuit aero road helmet and powering his TCR Advanced SL team bike past Italian Sonny Colbrelli (second) and Belgian Greg Van Avermaet (third) to earn the win.
“Wow, what can I say, I really have no words,” said Matthews, who became the first rider since Simon Gerrans in 2014 to win both Canadian WorldTour races. “I just can’t thank my team enough for believing in me throughout this really hard year, and again the boys were amazing.”
Indeed, Team Sunweb had to work hard to put their leader in position to contest the win. After an early breakaway was reeled in, several attacks were launched on the final lap. On the last climb of the decisive Mount Royal, three riders went off the front, but Matthews’s teammates remained calm and timed their chase to perfection.
“Everyone was working really hard to go for the double here in Canada and the hard work paid off,” said Team Sunweb coach Arthur van Dongen. “Two WorldTour victories in three days, unbelievable.”
