CCC Team rider Greg Van Avermaet wrapped up his 2019 racing season atop the UCI’s One Day Race World Rankings. The Belgian won the Grand Prix Cycliste de Montréal in September and scored an additional four podiums throughout the year to earn the top overall prize in cycling’s biggest one-day races.

“I’m happy to finish the season at the top of the UCI One Day Race World Ranking,” said Van Avermaet, who accumulated 2350 points at 15 races this year. “I think it shows what kind of rider I am and my ability to contest most of the one-day races in the calendar. I’m motivated to continue like this in 2020 and convert some of those podium places into victories.”

In addition to his win in Montréal, some of Van Avermaet’s 2019 highlights included finishing second at Omloop Het Nieuwsblad in Belgium and Clasica San Sebastian in Spain. He also finished third at the E3 BinckBank Classic in Belgium and the Grand Prix Cycliste de Quebec in Canada. He finished the season 276 points ahead of second-place Alexander Kristoff of Norway and 503 points ahead of Frenchman Julian Alaphilippe.

“I’ve always said that I am not a rider who wins 20 races a year, but I am always up there in every race, and hopefully I can get a few really nice wins throughout the year,” said Van Avermaet, who raced primarily on his TCR Advanced SL team bike with CADEX WheelSystems. “I missed a big win during the Classics this year, which was disappointing, but these are really hard races to win and it’s not enough to just have the legs, you also need everything to go right and a bit of luck. That’s why I was so happy to win in Montreal. After coming close to a big win throughout the year, it was a good reminder that I’m still capable of winning.”
