Brave Battle by Dumoulin to Defend Giro GC Lead!

Teams & Riders

It was a day of drama for Tom Dumoulin and Team Sunweb at the Giro d’Italia, with the Dutchman defending his overall lead on the queen stage of the three-week grand tour.

Facing three massive climbs covering 222km in the mountains of northern Italy, Dumoulin fought through stomach issues and bravely chased back alone after having to stop and take a nature break before the final climb up the Umbrailpass. He lost 2:17 to stage winner Vincenzo Nibali but managed to hold onto maglia rosa with a lead of 31 seconds over second-place Nairo Quintana in the general classification.

“At that moment I needed to stop to answer nature’s call,” Dumoulin explained after finishing on his TCR Advanced SL and wearing a special pink Giant Rev helmet. “When I was chasing back I decided to fight and not give up and then see where we were after the finish. It was tough, and of course it’s disappointing. The legs were good and I feel like I could have been up there with the other GC guys but that’s not how it worked out.”

Despite the setback, Dumoulin and the team survived the toughest stage yet—with its climbs over the iconic Mortirolo and Stelvio passes as well as the Umbrailpass—with their overall lead intact.

“Apart from Tom’s stop, everything went great,” said Team Sunweb coach Aike Visbeek. “We lost some of the lead, but Tom is still in pink, which is the most important thing. Looking ahead, we still have a time trial in Milan and over the coming days we have more good opportunities for Tom.”
