The 2019 Contend SL road bike has caught the attention of gear editors, earning positive reviews and recommendations from both BikeRadar and Cycling Weekly.

Both media outlets tested the lightweight aluminum all-rounder and both gave it high marks for its ride quality and value.

“The Giant Contend SL 1 is a superb bike for its prices,” wrote Cycling Weekly tester Symon Lewis, who went on to praise its road handling when compared to other bikes in its class including the Specialized Allez and Cannondale CAAD12. “What sets the Giant Contend SL 1 apart from those bikes, and most bikes in the aluminum category, is the ride quality, which is amazingly comfortable and assured.”

Lewis reported on some of the Contend SL’s key features and technologies, and how they affect its performance on the road. “The frame is made from lightweight ALUXX SL aluminum and is paired with a fork with carbon blades and an aluminum steerer,” he wrote. “It has been built for confident and comfortable miles in the saddle with a number of classic Giant performance factors to ensure it does just that.”

One key factor is the D-Fuse seatpost, which Lewis claims “works very well to hide road buzz.”

Cycling Weekly recommended the Contend SL for consumers, giving it a near-perfect score of 9/10.

Simon Withers of BikeRadar had a similar experience on the Contend SL1, giving it a ranking of 4.5 stars (out of 5). Withers noted that the newest model now comes with higher volume tires (28mm) and also has a wider gear range (11-34 cassette), two updates that give it a smoother ride and increased capabilities on hilly terrain.

Summing up his test, Withers wrote: “The Contend SL was never less than assured at all times, uphill and down, over rough roads and smooth. It’s ideal for fun-filled rides over rolling countryside, as you sit in the saddle and spin along.”
