Giant-sponsored triathlete Tim Van Berkel showed strong early season form with a podium finish at the Ironman 70.3 Davao in the Philippines last weekend.

The Australian finished strong in the scorching heat, closing in on second-place finisher Craig Alexander during the run to finish third, just 45 seconds behind his fellow Australian for the final podium spot. German Markus Rolli took the win.

Held on the island of Mindanao, starting and finishing at Azuela Cove, the race drew a strong field of more than 1800 competitors in all. Van Berkel came to the Philippines following a strong podium performance last month, when he also finished third at Ironman 70.3 Geelong in Australia.

Van Berkel is currently focused on the upcoming Ironman South Africa, which is less than two weeks away, and used the race in the Philippines as a tune-up for the longer distance ahead. Riding his Trinity Advanced Pro bike with a pre-production aero WheelSystem labeled #overachieve, Van Berkel came away pleased with his performance.

“I’m really happy to get the final podium spot here in the Philippines considering I just finished up a big Ironman training block for South Africa,” said Van Berkel. “Because of my training, I was pretty tired coming into this race. I didn’t feel great on the swim and bike, but I managed a strong run to finish it off.”

The upcoming Ironman South Africa is a qualifier for the Ironman World Championships in Hawaii later this year, and Van Berkel is aiming to secure a slot for his trip to Kona this fall.
