Giant-sponsored triathlete Sam Appleton won the Ironman 70.3 Santa Rosa, adding to his list of wins at the Northern California event. The Australian has won four of the last five editions of the race.

The victory marked a strong return to form for Appleton, who broke his collarbone this spring at the Ironman 70.3 Oceanside race in California. “I’m super happy to be back on top of the podium,” he said. “After the collarbone injury back in April, it’s nice to be back in full fitness and racing to my capacity. With the Ironman 70.3 World Championships held in Nice [France] at the beginning of September, I feel I’m coming into really good form at the right time.”

Appleton put in a strong effort riding his Trinity Advanced Pro race bike and wearing the Giant Rivet TT aero helmet, then pulled away from second-place finisher Tim O’Donell on the run. “I really set myself up for the win on the bike,” he said. “I posted the fastest bike split overall [2:03:49] on my Trinity Advanced Pro with a CADEX 65mm front wheel and a disc on the rear. I was then able to run away from O’Donnell and Tim Reed to take the win.”

Appleton, who spends most of his season living and training in Boulder, Colorado, is a familiar face to fans in Sonoma County, California. “Santa Rosa has always been good to me,” he said. “I have done this race five times and have been able to win four of those.”
