The Defy Advanced SL will help Rabobank riders take the edge off the season's roughest road courses.

Rabobank's Classics Machine: Defy Advanced SL!

24 februar 2012

The Belgian Classics season gets underway Saturday, and the riders of the Rabobank team will hit the pavé with newfound firepower. For the first time ever, the Rabobank team will race with a full fleet of Giant Defy Advanced SL bikes. The purpose of the bike, which Giant introduced in 2012, is simple—to deliver the ideal blend of endurance road complliance and pro race performance.

Developed with input from team rider Lars Boom, the Defy Advanced SL will be used by Rabobank riders in Saturday’s Omloop Het Nieuwsblad, which tests riders with punishing coblestone roads and, often times, inclement weather. Boom will be joined Saturday by teammates Matti Breschel, Paul Martens, Jos Van Emden, Maarten Tjallingii, Maarten Wijnants, Rick Flens, Bram Tankink and Carlos Barredo.

Rabobank riders are choosing the Defy Advanced SL for its smooth ride characteristics. Handcrafted with the same composite materials and manufacturing techniques as the team’s primary race bike, the TCR Advanced SL, the Defy Advanced SL was developed for epic road riding and also as an alternative-geometry option for long, grueling Classics-style races. Its more rounded tubes increase compliance and dissipate fatigue, and its integrated seatpost has a special shape to decrease levels of shock and vibration.

The 2012 Defy Advanced SL also benefits from new-for-2012 manufacturing techniques. It’s constructed using Continuous Fiber Technology, a process that allows the front triangle to be formed with fewer sections of composite material and therefore reduces weight. And with fewer junctions, the frame is also stronger. Also new for 2012 is the use of Carbon Nanotube Technology. Giant developed a new custom-blended resin that uses a microscopic polymer to strengthen Defy Advanced SL framesets and improve impact resistance by upwards of 14 percent.

Rabobank’s team Defy Advanced SL bikes also incorporates OverDrive 2, a new oversize steerer tube design that improves steering stiffness up to 30 percent. With the Omloop opening the classics season, and the historic races like Tour of Flanders and Paris-Roubaix soon to follow, watch for Rabobank riders and Giant bikes as they take on the rough roads of spring.
