Round 4 of the Mercedes-Benz UCI World Cup Downhill series took the Giant Factory Off-Road Team to Val di Sole, Italy, where steep, technical terrain and unpredictable weather presented a formidable challenge to racers.
Recently crowned Colombian national champion Marcelo Gutierrez was able to put in two solid runs on his Glory Advanced team bike in very different conditions between qualifiers and finals. He qualifed 16th in the rain on a wet track, and then matched that result on his finals run on a dry track.
Irishman Jacob Dickson, still on the comeback following a hand injury earlier this season, rode well in the wet qualifier, finishing 12th. He finished 41st in his finals run.
“It was a good race on an incredible track,” said Gutierrez. “We had several days of rain and then dry conditions in the final. That requires adjustments and you need to know how to handle the conditions and all the rocks and roots this track has. I managed a 16th place in both the qualifying and finals, I’m content with that. I know I went as fast as possible and I’m not too far from the top-10 which is my target.”
