Contend SL Earns BikeRadar Bike of the Year Selection!

The new Contend SL road bike has once again caught the attention of BikeRadar’s gear editors, scoring a near-perfect 4.5-star ranking (out of 5) and emerging as an affordable favorite in its Bike of the Year Awards for the second straight year.

Tester Simon Withers praised the Contend SL 1 model for  its “quality compact frame, carbon seatpost, comfort, handling and tubeless-ready wheels” and called it “one of the best all-round road bikes out there if £1000 is your maximum spend.”

Withers reported on the updates to this year’s Contend SL series, along with all the carry-over qualities that have made it a consistent favorite. Writing about the ALUXX SL aluminum frame, which is engineered for a balanced, all-rounder feel that blends confident rider positioning with agile road handling, Withers praised its updated geometry, which he found to be “more stable” while being “smooth, compliant and comfortable.”

Withers also pointed out the D-Fuse composite seatpost and tubeless-ready wheels and tires as standout features for a bike at this price. “Giant first developed the D-Fuse design back in 2014 for its professional-level cyclocross bikes, since then it has trickled down to more affordable bikes. Its rounded front and flattened rear, which resembles a letter ‘D’, is designed to be more compliant than a round post. And it’s always good to see a carbon post on a bike at this price.”

Looking at the wheelset, Withers wrote: “Giant is continuing with its tubeless-ready wheel and tyre pairing, which is very good to see on a bike at this price, especially because the tyres are 28mm wide.”
