Team Sunweb rider Max Walscheid won the Münsterland Giro Wednesday, beating fellow German John Degenkolb to the line in a finishing sprint on his Propel Advanced SL Disc team bike. The team did well to survive strong winds and a tight finishing approach, putting Walschied in position to sprint for the win.
“I’m super happy to win one of my favorite races and it means so much to win while I’m in Germany,” said Walscheid, who joined a list of top sprinters including Andre Greipel and Marcel Kittel who have won past editions of Münsterland Giro. “As a team we were really strong today and we had five riders in the first group after the crosswinds.”
The winds split the peloton into pieces, leaving a small group of about 30 riders by the end. But Walscheid, wearing the Giant Pursuit aero road helmet and new Surge Pro shoes, made the right moves to be in position. “We kept our nerves and kept the legs quiet to wait for the sprint,” he said. “We trusted in my ability to win the sprint, and in the end I’m super happy to finish it off.”
Team Sunweb coach Tom Veelers said the entire team worked well together. “On the crosswind sections, the team were really sharp and we ended up with five riders in the front group when the race split,” he said. “We then focused on preparing for the sprint with Max, and the guys did a brilliant job bringing him into position.”
The win was Walscheid’s second of the year following his stage win at the Tour de Yorkshire back in May.
