Bike Check: Leo Páez's Custom XtC Advanced SL 29

10 March 2020

Colombian Leonardo Páez Léon will proudly wear the rainbow stripes this year after winning the 2019 UCI Mountain Bike Marathon world title in Switzerland last September. To honor his accomplishment, and to give Páez a competitive advantage (not to mention some extra motivation), Giant has produced some special race bikes for him to race this year.

Here’s a look at the first of Páez’s new 2020 race bikes, an ultralight XtC Advanced SL 29. Engineered with the highest stiffness-to-weight ratio of any hardtail mountain bike in its class, this is Páez's bike of choice for fast XC courses when climbing speed matters most. It's the lightest MTB frame Giant has ever produced, and each frame is custom-tuned for compliance based on its size. Individual composite layup schedules are used to optimize vertical compliance, giving racers like Páez a smoother ride on XC terrain.

With custom-painted #LionPaez graphics, the full-composite frame is spec’d with a unique mix of components hand-picked by Páez, including a SRAM XX1 Eagle AXS electronic drivetrain, RockShox SID Carbon 100mm suspension fork, custom Space Carbon wheels and Maxxis tires.

Páez will certainly be one to watch this year as he once again sets his sights on the top marathon XC events around the globe. And with a bike like this, #LionPaez will certainly be easy to spot.
