Marcelo Gutierrez led the Giant Factory Off-Road Team’s downhill squad at the 2017 UCI Mountain Bike World Championships, posting a strong top-10 finish in the elite men’s race in Cairns, Australia.
Gutierrez represented Colombia, and was joined by his teammates Eliot Jackson riding for the U.S. team and Jacob Dickson riding for Ireland. Jackson and Dickson finished 28th and 42nd respectively.
Racing his Glory Advanced team bike in dry, dusty conditions on a course that’s familiar to him, Gutierrez was determined to finish his UCI racing season on a high note.
“It was my third time on this track, but this race was pretty special to me,” said Gutierrez, who earlier this year won his seventh Colombian national downhill championship. “This year I had a few good races, then some problems and crashes, so this race was a bit of revenge for me. I wanted to prove that I can be there, with the top finishers.”
Gutierrez put in a powerful finals run wearing the new Giant Shuttle DH shoe, and in the end finished eighth.
“I enjoyed this track a lot,” Gutierrez said. “It was really dusty and fast. This is how I wanted to finish the season, with a top-10. Now I’m looking forward to going home to be with my friends and recover from all the effort that I gave this year. So thanks to my Giant Factory Off-Road Team, all the people that support us, and the Colombian guys with the flags out on the track.”
