Geschke Wins KOM Classification at Tour of Poland!

Friday 9 August 2019

CCC Team rider Simon Geschke captured the King of the Mountains classification at the Tour of Poland, a seven-day WorldTour stage race that concluded Friday in Bukowina Tatrzańska.

Geschke was aggressive throughout the weeklong race, joining breakaways for three consecutive days. On Friday’s final stage, a hilly 132km route, the German joined an early break of 14, along with teammate Serge Pauwels, and gobbled up KOM points on all five categorized climbs.

Matej Mohoric launched a solo attack from the break with 57km to go and went on to win the stage, but Geschke kept chasing and eventually finished the day 12th, 2:15 back. He ended up 19th overall in the general classification.

“It was not really planned to go for the jersey, we wanted to go for the stage win and possibly the top ten overall,” said Geskche, who rode his TCR Advanced SL with a CADEX WheelSystem. “Going into the breakaway was the best possible way to achieve that and I’m happy that I could be up there together with Serge Pauwels.”

Geschke said the team was particularly motivated racing in front of the home crowd.

“You always want to win, especially at a home race,” Geschke said. “And as a Polish WorldTour team, this is our home race. We came here to win a stage, but at this level it’s never easy and instead we go home with the mountain jersey, which is a nice reward. We tried to race as aggressively as we could.”
