Giant Factory Off-Road Team rider Jacob Dickson scored a podium finish in the Garbanzo Downhill event at this week’s Crankworx Whistler Mountain Bike Festival in British Columbia, Canada.

The Irish national champion put in a strong ride on his Glory Advanced team bike to post one of his best results so far this year, finishing second, less than 2 seconds off the pace of five-time DH world champion Sam Hill.

At more than 7km long, with a vertical drop of about 3500 feet, the Garbanzo DH is more than double the length of a typical World Cup DH course and is considered one of the sport’s toughest challenges. Dickson raced it for the first time ever last year and finished 12th, showing huge improvement this year.

“I was feeling really good on my bike and having so much fun riding in Whistler,” said Dickson, who wore Giant Shuttle DH shoes“My run was really smooth and I just tried to keep the mistakes to a minimum. I’m super happy I got second, 1.6 seconds off first behind a mountain bike legend Sam Hill.”

Dickson’s teammate Marcelo Gutierrez came into the Garbanzo DH as the favorite, having won the race five times before, but the Colombian ran into some bad luck when a crash derailed his run.

“That’s racing,” said a disappointed Gutierrez. “Sometimes you try really hard but it isn’t enough, sometimes things happen like a crash or a mechanical. It’s hard to take, I really wanted to get six wins in a row. I was feeling confident and in a good state of mind, but you don’t always get what you want. I just have to move onto the next one and keep my faith.”

The Giant Factory Off-Road Team is competing at a variety of competitions during the Crankworx Whistler event, from enduro racing to DH and other races throughout the week.
