Team Sunweb rider Phil Bauhaus sprinted to a podium finish at Stage 3 of the Tour Down Under in Australia, his top result so far at the opening race of the 2018 UCI WorldTour. The third stage of the weeklong stage race challenged riders with winds and hot temperatures—so hot in fact that race organizers shortened it by 20km.
“I’m really happy with second today,” said Bauhaus after scoring the strong result on his TCR Advanced SL bike. “It was a really hot day and the conditions were challenging, but I’m pleased that we came through with a good result.”
The race took riders from Glenelg to Victor Harbor. The plan was to have three 13km finishing circuits in Victor Harbor, but due to the heat officials reduced it to one. An early breakaway was finally swept up with 15km to go, and Bauhaus’s Team Sunweb squad went to work positioning him for the finish.
“The team delivered me into the last turn in the best position,” said Bauhaus, who wore the Giant Rev helmet. “So I was able to follow the right wheel and just pass another rider to take second.”
The weeklong Tour Down Under stage race continues through Sunday.
