Warren Barguil, the recently crowned King of the Mountains winner at the 2017 Tour de France, joins a youthful Team Sunweb lineup for the Vuelta a España. The final grand tour of the season kicks off in Nîmes, France, on August 19 and will cover 3,298km over three weeks before finishing September 10 in Madrid.
Team Sunweb’s Vuelta roster has been selected with an eye toward the future, with five of its nine riders tackling their first-ever grand tour.
“We have a good combination of experienced riders and young talents with huge strength and potential in our lineup,” said Team Sunweb coach Marc Reef. “We want our younger riders to see what it takes to complete a three-week race and give them the opportunity to learn from our experienced grand tour riders without any form of pressure.”
Barguil, who lit up the Tour de France with his climbing skills on his way to winning the polka-dot jersey, will have plenty of opportunities in Spain. This year’s Vuelta is packed with summit finishes, including the brutal and legendary Angliru climb on the next-to-last day. Barguil will be looking to add to his two Vuelta stage wins from 2013.
In addition to Barguil, Team Sunweb will be anchored by road captain Johannes Fröhlinger, along with experienced stage racers Chad Haga and Wilco Kelderman. The five grand tour rookies are Søren Kragh Andersen, Chris Hamilton, Lennard Hofstede, Lennard Kämna and Sam Oomen.
“The team have just come out of a solid preparation including a combination of racing and training at altitude and are really motivated for a great race,” Reef said. “We have completed some recons and analysis to become familiar with the important sections of the course and to help us formulate the best plan suited to our strengths in order to achieve our goal of looking for GC possibilities in Spain.”
The team will be racing on a number of Giant bikes including the TCR Advanced SL for road stages and the Trinity Advanced Pro TT for time trials. They will also have their choice of Giant helmets including the Rev and Pursuit for road stages and the Rivet TT for time trials.
