BikeRadar recently tested Giant’s new Surge Pro footwear, giving the pro-level road racing shoe a near-perfect rating of 4.5 (out of 5) stars.

Warren Rossiter, senior technical editor for BikeRadar, reported on the unique design of the Surge Pro, including its innovative ExoBeam sole, and the rest of the technologies that set it apart from other road shoes.

“Most cycling shoes are made from a board-last construction, where the upper (the last) is attached to a flat board (the sole),” Rossiter wrote. “Each of the uppers on the Surge Pro shoes, however is stitched together underneath the foot to form a ‘slip’ that is subsequently bonded to the corresponding sole.”

This, combined with the ExoWrap closure and twin Boa dials, made for a comfortable, efficient feel on the bike, Rossiter wrote:

“Tighten the associated Boa dial and the ExoWrap pulls the lower part of the instep up and towards your foot without producing any uncomfortable creases. Once you get used to the greater freedom of movement the Surge Pro shoes offer (it helps if you tighten the upper Boa dial more than you’d think necessary), they provide a very comfortable yet stiff ride.”

Summing it up, BikeRadar offered this verdict on the Surge Pro: “Innovative design combines stiffness and freedom of movement.”
