Giant Factory Off-Road Team rider Josh Carlson kicked off his 2018 race season on a high note, scoring a podium finish at the Thredbo Super Enduro. The unique Australian event, now in its second year, tests riders and their machines as they race on three gravity trails within a five-hour period. Held at the bike park at Thredbo Resort in the Snowy Mountains of New South Wales, the event attracted some top enduro pros this year. You can watch Carlson on one of the tracks, the Cannonball DH, in this video of his run.
“Getting in a pre-season race like the Super Enduro at Thredbo was great,” said Carlson, who ended up finishing third overall behind fellow Enduro World Series pros Jared Graves and Richie Rude, who were first and second respectively. “The weather played a massive part in the day’s race strategy. The courses dried out dramatically as the five-hour time window counted down. I went out early and hard, expecting track conditions to deteriorate, but was pleasantly surprised when they changed for the better. It made for a tough day of racing but lots of fun and good times.”
The race at Thredbo also provided a great opportunity for Carlson to get some race time on his new Reign Advanced Pro team bike with a new DVO suspension setup, as well as new gear including the Giant Line shoes. “Our new Factory Team bike is the best I’ve ever felt,” Carlson said. “I can’t wait to get the season underway in a few short weeks. The new DVO suspension and Maxxis tires worked phenomenally, I was stoked to get in a lot of DH race laps to get a feeling for some race setups.”
After living in Canada the past few years, Carlson relocated back to his home nation of Australia this year with his family. “It’s been a long, busy summer of training and settling back into Australian life,” he said. “Landing on the podium at my first race of 2018 is a good sign that my form is heading in the right direction and the work I have put in is paying off.”
Next, Carlson heads to California for a team training camp before kicking off the 2018 Enduro World Series March 24-25 in South America.
