Sanchez Wins Paris-Nice Stage 6!

9 március 2012

Rabobank rider Luis Leon Sanchez scored his first big victory of the season Friday, winning Stage 6 of Paris-Nice in Sisteron, France. Sanchez, who has made a career out of capitalizing on daring breakaways, escaped with veteran German rider Jens Voigt and then sprinted to victory on his Giant TCR Advanced SL.

Sanchez, who won Paris-Nice in 2009, rode aggressively in the 176.5km stage from Suze-la-Rousse to Sisteron. He helped launch the decisive move on the Cote du Pas du Ventoux.

Seven riders escaped, and Sanchez and Voigt proved the strongest of the bunch. The two separated themselves from the rest, and Sanchez made his winning move inside the final kilometer. He also gained a little bit of time in the GC standings, and now sits 13th overall.

This year marks the 70th running of the weeklong Paris-Nice stage race. Often called the Race to the Sun, it starts near Paris and travels south to its traditional finish on the Promenade des Anglais in the seaside city of Nice. Paris-Nice is the second race of the 2012 UCI World Tour. The race concludes on Sunday.
