Compton Crushes at Euro ’Cross Races!

11 december 2011

Rabobank-Giant cyclocross rider Katie Compton showed dominating form at two major European races over the weekend, racking up back-to-back wins in Belgium.

Compton, the No. 1 ranked female ’cross rider in the world, came from behind to win Saturday’s Fidea Scheldecross Antwerp on her Giant TCX Advanced SL bike.

The U.S. National Champion tangled with another rider early in the race, which caused her wheel skewer to open and slip. After several trips to the pits, Compton came back to catch the lead group being powered by Hanka Kupfernagel. The American then took the lead and went on to win with a one-minute gap over second-place Sanne Cant of Belgium. It was the first time Compton has won the Scheldecross race.

The next day Compton and the rest of the women’s field faced one of the most technically challenging courses yet this season at Vlaamse Druivenveldrit race. Facing wet, slippery surface conditions and constant ups and downs, Compton had to fight off Brit Nikki Harris to take the win.

In men’s European ’cross racing this weekend, Rabobank-Giant rider Bart Aernouts had one of his best performances so far this season, finishing a close second to fellow Belgian Sven Nys at the Vlaamse Druivenveldrit race. Aernouts rode aggressively on his TCX Advanced SL, finishing 11 seconds behind Nys.

Meanwhile, Aernouts’ Dutch teammates Lars van der Haar and Gerben de Knegt turned in top-10 finishes at Scheldecross on Saturday, finishing seventh and eighth respectively.
