27 november 2011

Rabobank-Giant cyclocross pro Bart Aernouts scored his best result so far this season with a strong podium finish at round 3 of the World Cup series in Koksijde, Belgium.

Aernouts, who has shown steady improvement throughout the season, battled near the front on his Giant TCX Advanced SL, surviving all the attacks to join an elite four-man group at the midway point of the race. The Belgian showed smooth form in the technical sandy sections, trading positions with Belgians Sven Nys and Kevin Pauwels, and the current World Champion from the Czech Republic, Zdenek Stybar.

In the end, Aernouts finished third, just behind Nys and Pauwels. He now sits sixth overall in the World Cup. Aernouts’ teammate Gerben de Knegt was 14th in Koksijde and is now 11th overall in the World Cup.

In the elite women’s race, American Rabobank-Giant rider Katie Compton also made the podium, finishing third despite having a slow start. The U.S. National Champion, who won the opening round of the World Cup, is now third overall in the World Cup.
