Barguil Scores Top-10 at Flèche-Wallonne!
Team Sunweb rider Warren Barguil scored a top-10 finish at Flèche-Wallonne, the hilly 204km midweek classic in the Ardennes region of Belgium. The 25-year-old Frenchman finished sixth on his TCR Advanced SL team bike, improving on his ninth-place finish here last year.
"I'm really happy with the result," Barguil said. "The whole team did a really good job, I never felt the wind today, which was a key aspect."
Sandwiched between the Amstel Gold Race and Liege-Bastogne-Liege during the "Ardennes Week" of the spring classics, Flèche-Wallonne features nine steep climbs, and usually comes down to a battle on the last of three climbs up the Mur de Huy. This year was no different. After an early breakaway group of six riders was caught, there were several attacks in the hills that mark the closing kilometers.
Flying toward the base of the decisive final climb, Barguil’s Sunweb teammates did well to position their leader. "Wilco [Kelderman] and Michael [Matthews] positioned me really well going onto the final climb, which was really important," Barguil said.
On the charge to the finish, the Frenchman showed again that he’s one of the world’s best climbers. In the end he finished with a select group of 12 at the head of the race, just behind the day’s winner Alejandro Valverde.
“We are happy with today,” said Sunweb coach Aike Visbeek. “The plan was to ride for Warren and try to get a top 10, which is exactly what we did. We wanted to get him in a good position going onto the Mur de Huy, and he was in the top-15 there which was good.”
