The Norwegian duo Kristian Blummenfelt and Gustav Iden thrilled fans in Nice with a record-setting run by Blummenfelt and the fastest bike split of the day from Iden.

Kristian Blummenfelt charged through the field to finish second at the 2026 IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship in Nice, France, while fellow Giant athlete Gustav Iden rode the fastest bike split of the day on his way to a fourth-place finish. Each raced on the Trinity Advanced SL bike and wore a Giant Rivet Mips helmet.

Blummenfelt delivered a dramatic late-race charge along the Promenade des Anglais, overcoming a deficit of more than two minutes after the bike leg to finish just 18 seconds behind winner Hayden Wilde of New Zealand. His half-marathon split of 1:05:12 was the fastest run in IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship history. The Norwegian crossed the line in 3:51:09, with defending champion Jelle Geens of Belgium third at 3:52:40 and Iden fourth in 3:53:16.

Blummenfelt started the day near the front, exiting the 1.9km swim in 23:50 as part of a large lead group. From there, the race headed into the hills above Nice for a demanding 90km bike leg featuring the long climb to Coursegoules and a fast, technical descent back toward the Mediterranean.

While Blummenfelt settled into his own rhythm on the bike, Iden was on the move. Starting the ride more than a minute behind the leaders after the swim, the two-time IRONMAN 70.3 world champion steadily worked his way toward the front. Iden said he felt particularly good descending and cornering on his Trinity Advanced SL with a CADEX Aero WheelSystem.

"I had an incredible day going downhill," Iden said in a post-race interview. "I think that's when I have the most fun in life. It's the best feeling ever."

Iden continued to gain ground through the mountainous middle section of the course and returned to Nice in sixth place. His 2:16:43 bike split was the fastest of the day and established a new bike-course record, eclipsing the previous mark set in 2019.

Blummenfelt reached the second transition in 16th place, nearly two and a half minutes behind the leaders. With 21.1km remaining, the 2020 Olympic champion and former IRONMAN and IRONMAN 70.3 world champion launched a remarkable comeback.

Blummenfelt tore through the opening kilometers and began picking off competitors one by one. By the 10km mark he had moved into fifth and was closing rapidly on the podium positions.

As Wilde led at the front, Blummenfelt continued to cut into the gap. He moved past Geens into second and entered the final kilometers with the leader in sight. Blummenfelt ultimately ran out of road, crossing the line 18 seconds behind Wilde after posting a blistering 1:05:12 half-marathon.

Iden also finished strong, running 1:08:51 to secure fourth place and give Giant two athletes in the top four.

The result marked a second consecutive runner-up finish at the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship for Blummenfelt, who also finished second to Geens at the 2025 championship in Marbella, Spain.

For Iden, the performance continued his return to the front of international long-course racing. The Norwegian is a two-time IRONMAN 70.3 world champion and won the IRONMAN World Championship in Kona in 2022.
