Hofstede Podiums In Tour of California Breakaway Ride!

Teams/Riders

Team Sunweb rider Lennard Hofstede scored a podium finish at the Amgen Tour of California Wednesday, surviving a long breakaway and finishing third on the hilly 160km Stage 4 from Santa Barbara to Santa Clarita.

Hofstede, a 22-year-old first-year pro from the Netherlands, joined a breakaway group of six riders that escaped early, just 10km into the stage that traveled from the coastal city of Santa Barbara, through the Santa Ynez and Topatopa mountains, before a flat run-in to the finish.

“Today was a day that we knew a break could stay away so we wanted to get me into whatever went up the road,” said Hofstede, who rode his TCR Advanced SL team bike and wore the Giant Rev helmet. “The break happened on a difficult moment and it took us some time before we managed to get a good gap.”

The group, which lost one rider and was down to five, built up a maximum lead of nearly 9 minutes—but had to dig deep to fight off a charging peloton in last 20km.

“It started to look more and more like we were going to make it,” Hofstede said. “In the end it came to a sprint between the break. I made a small mistake and ended up coming third, a result I am still really pleased with.”
