Gutierrez, a nine-time national champion in Colombia, said winning the National Games four times in a row is one of the top achievements of his career.
“I could not be more satisfied,” said the 29-year-old. “Winning such an important event four times over the past 11 years proves all the hard work pays off. It’s one thing to win an event that happens every year, but this is like a mini Olympics that happens once every three or four years.”
“The track was pretty epic,” Gutierrez said. “The builders did a great job on it. There were some cool features including one technical rock drop that made us think twice on it. It was a really tricky track with loose rocks that were hard to spot.”
A crash in practice left Gutierrez with a sore knee, but he was able to fight through the pain during his finals run.
“I knew that was going to make things even harder, but I kept calm and was just hoping for the best,” Gutierrez said. “I was determined to go all in for the final run and was able to pull it off.”
