Dumoulin Wins Tour de France TT Stage 20!
Team Sunweb rider Tom Dumoulin powered his Trinity Advanced Pro TT bike to victory at Stage 20 of the Tour de France, a 31km time trial held on the eve of Sunday’s race finish in Paris.
The win also cemented a podium finish in the general classification for the Dutchman, who has ridden brilliantly over the past three weeks to achieve a breakthrough second-place finish on cycling’s grandest stage.
Dumoulin, wearing a special rainbow-striped white skinsuit signifying his time trial world champion’s status, blitzed the hilly route through French Basque Country. He poured on the power in the second half of the race to beat defending Tour de France champion Chris Froome by 1 second.
“It’s crazy,” said Dumoulin, who rode with his Giant Rivet TT helmet and a prototype rear wheel being developed by Giant labeled #overachieve. “I didn’t know anything about split times. I still thought Froome was one second ahead of me when I crossed the line. Everybody said I was second by one second. It’s an amazing day.”
In addition to winning the stage, which was the only individual time trial in this year’s Tour, Dumoulin held off Froome and other contenders battling for the podium. With just the final stage to Paris remaining, he is set to finish second overall behind Welshman Geraint Thomas.
