The making of an XC Legend

When it was first introduced in 2005, the Giant Anthem expanded the limits of what cross-country bikes could do. With its lightweight frame and groundbreaking Maestro Suspension technology, it helped performance-minded XC riders tackle technical racecourses and trails with more speed and control.

That original Anthem featured 90mm of rear suspension paired with an ALUXX SL aluminum frameset. Aggressive geometry, including a 72-degree head angle, and a focus on efficiency revealed its intentions: This was an XC race machine. Working with our pro racers, including Adam Craig and Rune Hoydahl, we immediately began development on a composite framed Anthem. Nearly a half-pound lighter, and also stiffer, that Anthem won several national titles and became a mainstay on the World Cup circuit.

The Anthem platform continued to evolve in the years that followed—with progressive geometry updates and added suspension travel—and in 2010 we introduced the first Anthem X 29er. Engineered with 100mm of suspension front and rear, and a frame that was optimized for the new large-diameter 29-inch wheels, it quickly gained a following with XC racers and trail riders.

Giant Factory Off-Road Team rider Carl Decker showed what the new machine was capable of when he rode it to his first of five consecutive titles at the Downieville Classic All-Mountain World Championships—a race considered by many to be the ultimate all-around XC and trail competition.

A year after the original Anthem X 29er appeared, a lighter and stiffer composite version was introduced. The Anthem X Advanced 29er became a favorite among riders who appreciated its lightweight climbing capabilities blended with the stability and speed of the large-diameter wheels.

Now, after 12 years of evolution, XC-specific wheel-size research and engineering, along with some key updates to our Maestro Suspension, the next-generation Anthem 29 range has arrived. Engineered with 90mm of rear suspension travel, and 100mm up front, it features optimized 29er XC geometry and comes race-ready out of the box. More than a decade of XC domination. Continual progression. A hunger for race-winning performance that never goes away. That’s the story of Anthem. Welcome to its next chapter.
