The Surge road shoes were first introduced in 2016, featuring a wide range of innovative new technology from Giant. For the 2019 lineup, the Surge has undergone a significant transformation, through assistance and input with pro riders on Team Sunweb, to improve on the design and technology even further to make our best road shoe to date.
The Surge uses Giant’s innovative MES (Motion Efficiency System) technology to provide a higher standard of efficiency through superior power transfer, fit and comfort. This is achieved by utilizing two key bits of design;
ExoBeam – connecting the front plate of the shoe to the rear, the ExoBeam is a crucial part of the Motion efficiency system. The beam runs along the sole of the shoe, providing stiffness for the pedalling motion, but allowing a small degree of side to side rotation to let your foot and leg move naturally with your pedal stroke.
ExoWrap – in regular road cycling shoes, the closure system starts and ends around the top of the foot. With the Surge, the innovative ExoWrap system begins and ends at the arch of the foot, providing a 360-degree fit. In the top of the range Surge Pro, two BOA dials are used to give a lot of micro adjustment to obtain the perfect fit.
What’s New With The Surge Pro?
Whilst the motion efficiency system, including the ExoBeam and ExoWrap, featured on the last generation of Surge shoes, there have been some noticeable upgrades for this year.
The profile of the ExoBeam on the Surge has been reduced to decrease the weight of the shoe, whilst still retaining the same amount of rigidity. This makes the shoe much lighter and responsive, without affecting the performance. The reduction of material has created an aesthetic improvement too – it’s much nicer to look at compared to the original Surge.
A brand new reinforced PU leather upper gives a classy finish to the Surge, whilst also reducing the weight and making it less bulky compared to the previous model. The new fabric features lazer cut micro-perforations to provide an improvement in ventilation but still offer protection when riding in adverse conditions.
The Surge Pro now features a customizable innersole, with arch supports included in the box to give the perfect fit without needing additional insoles.
Improved plate design
The forefoot plate has increased in width by almost 10mm. Whilst it doesn’t sound much, this gives greater stability and power transfer through the pedal stroke and increases the lateral stiffness even further.
An ergonomically designed heel cup improves the fit of the shoe, and the use of a unique ‘Sharkskin’ fabric means that the heel can’t slip out, improving comfort and reducing any loss of power through heel slippage.
Check out Cycling Weekly’s review on the Surge Pro – they scored the shoes 9/10 and were impressed with the stiffness and comfort provided, along with the value for money when compared to other top end road shoes.
