Brand new for 2019, the Surge Pro is the top of the range road shoe designed in conjunction with pro team riders for ultimate power transfer and top-level performance. Despite just being released, Cycling Weekly was quick to get their feet into a pair and find out whether the redesign has made a noticeable difference to the performance.
Tester Simon Smythe was quick to notice the impact of the carbon ExoBeam, designed to provide stiffness longitudinally but allowing a small amount of flex laterally which reduces the strain on the leg joints. “The Surge Pros are incredibly stiff and that’s the overwhelming initial impression.”
The innovative ExoBeam aims to increase power transfer, something which Simon Smythe noticed on his ride; “The stack height feels reassuringly low, giving a very connected feel with the pedals and the feet stay firmly in place with no heel lift noticeable”.
The positive impressions of the shoes continued when focusing away from the sole and onto the upper material; “Stitched PU leather with laser-cut perforations give the Surges a look that’s as classy as their performance”.
Overall, the review of the Surge Pro road shoes was highly positive, receiving a near-perfect 9/10 and summed up by reviewer Smythe as “The innovative ExoBeam system paired with the highly supportive ExoWrap upper makes for a shoe that feels super connected, very fast and kind to the joints too”.
