Matthews Sprints to Victory at GP Cycliste de Québec!

Teams & Riders

Team Sunweb rider Micheal Matthews had a breakthrough ride Friday at the Grand Prix Cycliste de Québec, sprinting to the victory at the Canadian WorldTour race.

The Aussie timed his sprint to perfection, powering his TCR Advanced SL team bike past Belgians Greg Van Avermaet and Jasper Stuyven (second and third, respectively) to take the win.

“Wow, I’m super happy with the day I had,” said Matthews, who wore the Giant Pursuit aero road helmet to score the win. “The boys supported me really well throughout the day and I’m just super happy that I could finish it off for them with a really strong sprint at the end.”

After suffering through some injuries and illness earlier this year, Matthews was focused on trying to deliver a solid result. He was joined by his family in Canada and dedicated his first win at a single-day WorldTour race to his wife and daughter.

The ninth edition of the GP Cycliste de Québec covered 16 laps on a 12.6km circuit in and around the walls of historic Québec City. It includes several tough climbs on every lap, including the Rue de la Montagne and Cote de la Potasse. After an early breakaway of three riders, Team Sunweb stuck to its plan to support and set up Matthews for the finale.

“We started the race with a lot of confidence to go for the win today with Bling,” said Team Sunweb coach Arthur Dongen. “After BMC started to control the race we joined in to help later with [Tom Stamsnijder]and Roy [Curvers]. Bling was never in difficulty thanks to the help of the other guys and did an amazing sprint at the finish. I’m super proud of the whole team effort.”
