All Giant and Liv E-Bikes are equipped with a SyncDrive motor. Exactly which type of motor depends on the bike. Our three different SyncDrive motor options are each specifically engineered and tuned to support specific riding styles whether that be daily commutes, recreational riding or high-performance road and off-road riding, you can be assured that the motor is providing optimal support for your E-Bike adventure.

All our SyncDrive motors are powered by Yamaha and Giant are in the unique position of being able to pair this motor with our own choice of battery, firmware and switchgear - a benefit no other brand can claim. This allows us to ensure the whole E-Bike system is therefore perfectly tuned to the needs of our E-Bikes. Our motors are designed to deliver instant motor engagement and smooth power delivery that feels like a natural extension of a rider’s own pedaling power – it does this through our unique PedalPlus sensor technology system. This combines speed and torque sensors with motor and pedal rotation sensors to produce consistent power across the entire gear range. By precisely measuring the amount of force a rider is applying to the pedals, it ensures the motor delivers a completely seamless power boost.

First of all, it’s worth noting that all our motor options have a maximum watt output of 250W. This is the legal maximum amount of power that an E-Bike motor can provide. Furthermore, the motors will only assist the rider up to a maximum assisted speed of 25km/h – again a legal limit.

So let’s now take a closer look at the three different motor options available:

SyncDrive Pro

The SyncDrive Pro motor is designed for high-performance E-bike riding. We have tuned the motor to make it more powerful, producing a performance-oriented riding style. The lightweight, compact SyncDrive Pro motor is used primarily on our high-performance E-bikes including the Road-E+ Pro and Trance E+ Pro off-road model. The Pro motor offers five different support modes with a maximum support ratio of 360%. The SyncDrive Pro motor is also our lightest motor available weighing in at 3.1kg.

SyncDrive Sport

The SyncDrive Sport motor offers five support modes and is equipped on E-bikes that are used for both everyday riding and more demanding off-road riding. This small mid-drive motor delivers a powerful 80Nm of torque and is widely acclaimed for its performance and reliability.

SyncDrive Life

SyncDrive Life is the ideal solution for our range of lifestyle E-bikes. This compact, mid-drive motor ensures perfect weight distribution, which makes the E-bike more stable and balanced. Its centralised mass leads to a natural weight balance while riding and while stopped, so it’s a great choice for recreational E-bike riders. It delivers a maximum 60Nm (Newton Meters) of smooth torque, letting you conquer hills and greater distances with ease.

The SyncDrive Life motor also features a really useful feature called ‘auto-mode’. By selecting auto-mode (which is a simple as flicking through the different assistance levels on the RideControl) the bike will adjust the power assistance level automatically depending on the rider cadence and the terrain. This can be especially useful when riding on undulating terrain, as the electrical assistance will be adjusted accordingly meaning the rider is comfortably able to pedal and ride without the need to regularly change assistance levels or gears.

What should you be looking for in an e-bike motor?

The key word when thinking about E-Bike motors, and something that is often overlooked, is ‘torque’. Torque is all about acceleration and climbing ability – the higher the torque figure, the better the bike will accelerate and climb. At 80Nm the Giant SyncDrive Pro and SyncDrive Sport offer the highest amount of torque available within the Giant E-Bike range.

It is also crucial to consider how this torque is applied. The SyncDrive Pro motor applies torque almost instantly – all 80Nm of torque is applied within 0.19 seconds of pushing on the pedals, meaning there is no lag and the bike feels smooth and responsive.

Benefits of the Giant SyncDrive motor and comparison to the competition?

The Giant SyncDrive motor technology is first class when it comes to E-Bike motors. Not only do both the SyncDrive Pro and Sport offer a considerable amount of torque, but they’re also competitively lightweight. Giant motors also offer a smoother acceleration curve in comparison to the market leader and because they are manufactured by Giant, our motors can be serviced in-house by Giant and don’t need returning to the manufacturer, as is the case with other brands. Furthermore, the SyncDrive Pro and SyncDrive Sport offer higher assistance levels than the competition with assistance levels of 360% and 350% respectively.
