Giant Ambassador George Fox has been riding since the age of 9 so he knows what works when it comes to cycling clothing. Read his thoughts on the new and updated Surge Pro road cycling shoe.
At the beginning of this year I was due some new shoes and decided to go with the Giant Surge Pro shoes. Sizing, I would always recommend trying them on in your local dealer before buying however if it helps at all I normally wear 44.5EU and the 44.5EU in the Surge Pro shoes was absolutely bang on.
The first time I wore the shoes the arch support was definitely noticeable, I’d moved from a fairly flat support in some Shimano shoes to these Surge Pros and was pleasantly surprised by the support from new.
I always expect shoes to wear in, it is generally the nature of the materials being used and the Surge Pros were no different, after a few rides the shoes upper began to really mold to the shape of my foot and now as hoped it is just like wearing a pair of slippers, with an insanely stiff carbon base!
The unique design of the Surge is definitely eye-catching and the stiffness attributes are noticeable when applying the power on the flat or climbing the steeper hills. Having a stiff sole is crucial for power transfer, whether you want to go faster on a group ride, smash a KOM on Strava or actually race at a national level the power transfer will always be a benefit!
The Boa dials really help this too, being able to crank them up and feel locked into the shoes is as important as the carbon sole and helps when really pulling up in the pedal stroke!
