Cycling And Exercising Within Government Guidelines

With the current changes in everyone’s lifestyle due to the Covid-19 outbreak, the importance of exercise is increasingly important. Regular exercise helps with both physical and mental well-being and is something we encourage, especially at this moment in time.

What form this exercise takes will vary from person to person and house to house, from walking the dogs or taking up running again to signing up to Zwift and getting used to riding your bike indoors

However, if you are still able to ride your bike outside, it is crucial that you stick within the government guidelines. As a reminder, these are highlighted below:

  • stay local and use open spaces near to your home where possible – do not travel unnecessarily
  • you should only go outside alone or with members of your own household
  • keep at least 2 metres apart from anyone outside your household at all times
  • gatherings of more than two in parks or other public spaces have been banned and the police will enforce this
  • if you have a garden, make use of the space for exercise and fresh air
  • take hygiene precautions when you are outside, and wash your hands as soon as you are back indoors

In addition to the above, British Cycling have also advised when riding outside that ‘all cyclists ride on routes you know well, that are close to home and that are well within your ability level.’ 

If we work together as a community and keep to the advice and guidelines, the longer we can all continue to ride in the great outdoors. To make this as easy as possible, here are some hints and tips that might help:

  • Rather than your normal group ride, head out with family and explore locally
  • Pass fellow cyclists wider than you normally would but acknowledge them as you pass
  • Be prepared to stop to let other cyclists go past and maintain the 2 metre gap
  • Visit the British Cycling website to see how you can keep riding but help your local community at the same time
