Giant Kendal - Castle Sportive

Giant Kendal - Castle Sportive

3 June

Lowther Castle

GIANT KENDAL – CASTLE SPORITVE; not just any sportive……. it starts and finishes at a castle!

SUNDAY 3RD JUNE, 2018 - Lowther Castle, Penrith

Join us at the majestic Lowther Castle for a ride around some of Cumbria’s best and quietest roads.  With views that will distract you from the odd cheeky hill and a stunning end to your adventure riding to the finish through the impressive castle grounds.

We have two routes for you to choose from, 100km or 50km, both equally spectacular with around 5120ft or 2000ft of ascent. On the longer route we also have a ‘feature’ climb, and for those that like a bit of competition this will be a Strava segment with prizes for the fastest man and woman (and we might even throw in a few spot prizes too!).

Entry details - up to 31st May 2018

Standard entry (from Monday 8th January) - £30 for 100km and £25 for 50km

Group discount available for 5 or more riders - £25 per person for 100km and £20 person for 50km

If you would like to enter as a group or club please contact us first as we will need to give you a promotional code to use when you register your entries so you receive the discounted rate.  Please either contact the shop on 01539 728057 or email events@giant-kendal.co.uk with the names of all the riders.  Apologies for the minor inconvenience of having to contact us first.

Route markings

The route will be well marked with 'CYCLE ROUTE' signs in addition to road marking arrows where necessary. However, we do also advise that you familiarise yourself with the route and carry a printed route card and description with you as a back-up. Additionally you can download the GPS file.

General ride details

Please ensure your bike is in a roadworthy condition for the event, including checking the brakes (important for the descents along the route!).

You should also bring tools, spare inner tubes and money for emergencies. There will be a ‘sweeper wagon’, but you need to be equipped for any mechanical difficulties you might have.

You can start the ride any time between 08:00am and 10:00am. A maximum of 20 riders will start every 2 minutes between these times. If you prefer a more sociable ride, or don’t want to ride on your own, there will be a number of groups led by the Giant Kendal team which anyone is welcome to join. These will leave between 08:30 – 09:00am for both routes.

You should choose your own start time but we advise slower riders start earlier to allow more time to complete the distance, especially if doing the longer route. This will also help to ensure riders are spread out on the roads. Finish times might range from 3-6 hours for the 100km route and 1.5 – 3 hours for the 50km.

It is compulsory that you wear a hard shell cycling helmet (ANSI standard or similar). No helmet, no ride.

You will need to register when you arrive; registration will be open from 07:00am and will be in the castle courtyard. Directions of where you need to go will be clearly marked. Any final updates or route information will be available at registration.

PLEASE NOTE THIS IS A NON-TIMED EVENT – so no timing chips will be required.

The finish

The finish route will take you through the grounds of Lowther Castle and there will be marshals at key places, in addition to signage, to guide you to the finish area. As this is a public place and you will be sharing the roads with everyone else, we ask that you are aware and show consideration to other visitors to the Castle, both vehicles and pedestrians, and follow the usual rules of the road.

How old do I have to be?

Minimum age for the event is 12 years of age.

Ample free parking at Lowther Castle.

Riders can use the facilities just off the main courtyard which will be signed. You will have exclusive access to one of the blocks.

Facilities at HQ (Lowther Castle)

Lowther Castle is open to the public between 10am – 5pm and has many attractions to keep your supporters entertained through the day; an exhibition, a number of gardens, woodland adventures and The Lost Castle. There is also a great cafe and shop.

Route safety

Both routes are on generally quiet roads, but please be aware of traffic and other cyclists.  Usual rules of the road apply, don’t ride more than two abreast, ride within your limits and in a way that is safe both to yourself and others on the road.

Will I be fit enough

You are the best judge of your fitness, but we suggest you take a look at the route maps if you are any doubt about the type of terrain you will be tackling and try to ride a few routes with similar climbing and distance before the event so your legs know what to expect.  Both routes are more than manageable for most cyclists, with the 50km being achievable for the majority and the 100km for those who are happy being on the bike a bit longer with a few hills.

What do I need to take on the ride

There are no specific event requirements, other than to wear a helmet and have a bike in working order, but we suggest you bring everything that you would usually take when out on your bike.  For example spare tubes, tyre levers, pump, multi-tool, mobile phone, water and food.

What if I have a mechanical or emergency

There is no official mechanical support along the route, although we will have a mechanic available at the start of the ride for any last minute minor problems.  The Giant Kendal team will be out on both routes to offer assistance wherever they can, but it’s best to ensure you are self-sufficient, especially for minor mechanicals.

In case of a serious medical emergency you should phone the emergency services immediately and then contact the event organiser as soon as possible.  For any minor incidents you should phone the event organiser who can arrange for a first aider or vehicle to collect you.  There will also be a ‘sweeper wagon’ at the back of the rides, but this is for emergencies only and not if your legs have run out of puff. (sorry!)

What to do if you get lost

If you think you have missed a sign or taken a wrong turn then try and retrace your route back to where you saw the last sign if possible, using the downloadable route card to help.  If you are unable to get yourself back on course then please ring the event organiser who will try and help guide you back on to the route.
