Vos Wins Women's World Cup Opener!

March 10, 2012

Marianne Vos of the Rabobank Women’s Team started the World Cup road season with a bang, winning Saturday’s Ronde van Drenthe in The Netherlands. Vos, who won the cyclocross world title six weeks ago and just started her road racing season a couple days ago, sprinted to the win on her Giant TCR Advanced SL.

Vos credited her new team for playing a big role in her win. “I’m really pleased with this win, but particularly pleased with the fact the team worked so well together,” she said. “The communication was excellent and we now seem to be in tune with each other. This creates great confidence for the rest of the season.”

On a tough 132.8km course that featured a number of cobblestone sections, Vos and her Rabobank teammate Sarah Düster joined an early breakaway. What started as a group of seven grew to nearly 30, including most of the Rabobank women.

There were several attacks in the final kilometers but Vos and teammate Pauline Ferrand-Prevot chased them down to control the finish. In the final dash to the line, Vos outsprinted fellow Dutch rider Kirsten Wild and Emma Johansson from Sweden to give the Rabobank women’s team its first World Cup win.
