Giant, Recycle-A-Bicycle, and Transportation Alternatives Donate 20 Bicycles to Occupy Sandy Relief Efforts

Giant Bicycle and Transportation Alternatives have delivered 20 Giant bicycles to Occupy Sandy in Brooklyn and The Rockaways. These bicycles, part of a donation by Giant of 100 Revel 2 mountain bikes, are for Occupy Sandy’s team of medics to treat victims of Hurricane Sandy who have been unable to get the medical attention they need.

Giant, Recycle-A-Bicycle, and Transportation Alternatives partnered in an initiative called ‘RIDE NYC FORWARD’ to provide mobility solutions and aid those hardest hit by the early November storm. “Occupy Sandy volunteers have been working almost around the clock since the hurricane struck – running food pantries, distributing clean clothing and blankets, supplying medical aid, and helping storm victims fill out paperwork to get assistance,” said An Le, Global Marketing Director of Giant Bicycles. “In many, many places the quickest way for these volunteers to get around is by bicycle, and it’s extremely rewarding to see the RIDE NYC FORWARD initiative in action, placing our Giant Revel 2 bikes with the tireless Occupy Sandy crew.”

The 20 bicycles will help Occupy Sandy’s team of medics travel around Brooklyn and the Rockaways. By giving these volunteers an easy and reliable way to travel, the bicycles will expand the reach of Occupy Sandy.

“As relief efforts continue apace in the Rockaways, it’s important for all of us to do what we can to help our fellow New Yorkers,” said Paul Steely White, Executive Director of Transportation Alternatives. “These bicycles will make it easier for Occupy Sandy’s team to get to those in need in Brooklyn and the Rockaways. It’s our hope that these bicycles, and the supplies and help they’ll carry, will bring comfort and hope to those hit hardest by Superstorm Sandy.”

Volunteers from Recycle-A-Bicycle and several bicycle retailers around New York City gathered to build the 100 Revel 2 bicycles early in December. Among the retailers who supplied professional mechanics were Metro Bicycles, Bike N Kite, Jeff’s Bicycles NYC, Brands Bicycle Center, and Bicycle Roots. Transportation Alternatives’ Bike Ambassadors received the 100 bike delivery for distribution to individuals and groups needing the most help. Occupy Sandy’s medics and volunteers will put the 20 bicycles to use immediately upon on delivery.

“Getting these Giant bikes to the medics and volunteers of Occupy Sandy highlights the meaningful role bikes can play, especially in times of recovery,” said Pasqualina Azzarello, Executive Director of Recycle-A-Bicycle. “We are humbled by the incredible efforts of Occupy Sandy relief workers and are honored to work in partnership with Giant Bicycle USA and Transportation Alternatives to help make this project possible.”
