Team Sunweb Development rider Joris Nieuwenhuis won the men’s Under-23 race at the UCI Cyclocross World Cup finals Sunday to capture the overall title on his TCX Advanced Pro team bike.
Racing in front of a home crowd in Hoogerheide, the 20-year-old Dutch rider rode away from his chasers with three laps to go to take the win. His performance capped off a strong season that saw him finish on the podium in five of the six World Cup races that he started.
“It was one of my goals to be in good shape throughout the whole year and I’m really glad that I managed to achieve this,” said Nieuwenhuis, who wore the Giant Rev helmet in his win. “It’s great to take the overall World Cup win, especially wearing my new Team Sunweb colors.”
Now Nieuwenhuis turns his attention to next week’s UCI Cyclocross World Championships, which will be held in Luxembourg for the first time since 1968.
“To finish the series with a win at Hoogerheide could not be better,” Nieuwenhuis said. “It gives me more confidence going into the World Championships.
