Team Sunweb rider Max Walscheid won the final stage at the Tour of Denmark Saturday, sprinting to victory on his Propel Advanced SL and capturing his first win of the 2017 season.
Walscheid’s win on the fifth and final stage followed a strong top-10 finish in the Stage 4 time trial. The team’s general classification leader, Lennard Hofstede, also had a strong performance at the five-day stage race, finishing fifth overall.
The final stage, a 198km race from Ebeltoft to Aarhus, saw a seven-rider break escape early, building up a maximum lead of more that 5 minutes. As they entered the finishing circuit, which consisted of eight laps, Team Sunweb led the chase, eventually catching the break with about 5km to go. From there, they helped put Walscheid in perfect position to contest the final sprint wearing his Giant Pursuit helmet.
“It was a victory where the whole team took part,” Walscheid said. “We took the initiative, showed confidence in ourselves and believed in the lead out as well as in my sprint. It was a big, big effort to catch seven guys back with just Ramon [Sinkeldam] and Max [Kanter] chasing, and Lennard [Hofstede] covering attacks.”
Hofstede finished with the main group to confirm his fifth place in the general classification.
“It was a very nice day for the team today because all six riders really contributed with strong efforts,” said Team Sunweb coach Morten Bennekou. “We managed to keep control with the breakaway so that they were caught with only 5km to go and after that we brought Max into a perfect position from where he won the sprint. With two podium spots and a fifth place on the GC, we can look back on a successful week in Denmark.”
