Team Sunweb finished off the Volta ao Algarve stage race on a high note, with 22-year-old Dutch rider Sam Oomen winning the Best Young Rider classification in the five-day Spanish stage race.
Oomen’s teammate Simon Geschke also had a strong performance on the final stage, which featured five categorized climbs and a summit finish at Malhão. Both riders scored their results on their new TCR Advanced SL team bikes.
Oomen pulled on the white jersey of the Best Young Rider following the first stage from Albufeira to Lagos, and then went on to defend it over the next four days. His first test came on Stage 2, when he had to fight to retain his position on a tough climb to the finish.
“It was a hard stage with a strong breakaway, so the pace was on all day,” Oomen said after the 188km stage to Fóia. “On the final climb it was every man for themselves. I felt pretty good on the climb so I gave it a try but there weren’t a lot of guys that wanted to cooperate. I’m happy that I could attack and be in the mix.”
Stage 3 was a 20km time trial, with Chad Haga earning the team’s top result, 11th on his Trinity Advanced Pro TT. The American wore the Giant Rivet TT helmet to score the solid early-season resut. Oomen managed to hold onto the white jersey in the TT, and he went on to defend it over the final two stages. In the end, the young Dutchman finished 13th in the general classification
Following the final stage, Team Sunweb coach Arther van Dongen said: “It’s been a good day and whole week for the team here. Today we saw a strong effort from Simon, and also having Chad in the break was the plan going into the stage. It’s nice to come away with a jersey for Sam as a reward for all their efforts.”
