Gutierrez, Dickson Collect National DH Titles!
Giant Factory Off-Road Team riders Marcelo Gutierrez and Jacob Dickson scored downhill national championship titles last weekend in their home nations.
Gutierrez collected his seventh Colombian elite men’s DH national title. Dickson won his fifth Irish championship and first ever in the elite men’s category.
Gutierrez returned home to Colombia, where he faced stiff competition and a tricky track with unpredictable conditions. Once again, he was able to live up to the moment, piloting his Glory Advanced team bike to victory. Gutierrez also wore the new Giant Shuttle shoe, made with a hydrophobic upper that repels water to minimize unwanted weight gain in wet, muddy conditions.
“This is a race where I feel so many things,” Gutierrez said. “There is a lot of pressure, really good competitors, and as every year, that desire to keep the Colombian flag on my jersey. The track was not easy this year. The weather changed and some sections ended up being really technical, but at the end the result was a win. Now there is only one thing to do, and that’s to represent my country around the world and to try and find as many podiums as I can this year.”
Gutierrez was joined on the podium by his brother Rafael, who finished second.
“I’m also really happy about Rafael’s result,” Gutierrez said. “So this my moment to say congratulations to him, just keep pushing, bro!”
Dickson also faced tough track conditions in Northern Ireland. Racing his Glory Advanced on a new course in Rostrevor, Co. Down, and wearing the new Shuttle shoe as well, the 19-year-old says he felt right at home in the slick conditions.
“We had a lot of rain and the track was very slippery, but I loved every minute of it,” Dickson said. “In my seeding run I put a good solid run down and ended up 10 seconds up. My finals run was going just as good until I made a silly mistake on one of the biggest features on the track. But somehow I ended up only 2 or 3 seconds slower and still took the win. I’m really happy to be Irish champion for the fifth time and win my first in the elite category.”
