Team Sunweb Wins Men's World Championship TTT!
Team Sunweb captured the elite men’s team time trial world championship Sunday in Bergen, Norway, setting a blistering pace on the 42.5km course to earn the gold medal. The win marked a historic day for Team Sunweb, which swept the men’s and women’s TTT races after the women’s team won earlier in the day.
Team Sunweb’s six-man squad was comprised of Tom Dumoulin (The Netherlands), Lennard Kämna (Germany), Wilco Kelderman (The Netherlands), Soren Kragh Andersen (Denmark), Michael Matthews (Australia) and Sam Oomen (The Netherlands). Each rode the Giant Trinity Advanced Pro TT bike. They also wore the Giant Rivet TT helmet to minimize drag, and special skinsuits created in partnership with its team apparel manufacturer Etxeondo.
“It’s crazy, first the women this afternoon and then us,” said Dumoulin, the 2017 Giro d’Italia champion and a medalist at previous world championships and Olympics time trial events. “The team was so homogenous, it was absolutely amazing. Normally you’d say that I was the best time trialist on paper, but with this team it was so smooth. We had a really good pace and kept it all the way to the line.”
While many of the other teams only had four men at the finish, Team Sunweb kept its six riders intact all the way to the end, posting a time of 47:50, which was 8 seconds faster than the second-place BMC Racing Team.
“That was part of our strategy as we knew that we could win a lot of time after the climb,” said Team Sunweb coach Adriaan Helmantel. “That was also the main reason for the selection of the team. We knew that we needed strong TT riders, but also strong climbers as there you could make a difference. Of course today is a really big day for the team, with the men’s and women’s teams working together. A big congratulations to the whole team, everybody who works so hard on all the details and all that fell into place today.”
