Team Sunweb rode to a silver medal in the 2018 elite men’s team time trial world championship Sunday in Innsbruck, Austria, covering the 62.8km course in a time of 1:07:26, 18 seconds off the winning time of the Quickstep squad. It was the second TTT medal of the day for Sunweb, following a bronze medal ride by the Team Sunweb women’s squad.
Team Sunweb’s six-man team was comprised of Tom Dumoulin (The Netherlands), Wilco Kelderman (The Netherlands), Soren Kragh Andersen (Denmark), Michael Matthews (Australia), Chad Haga (USA) and Sam Oomen (The Netherlands). Each rode the Giant Trinity Advanced Pro TT bike. They also wore the Giant Rivet TT helmet to minimize drag and prototype rear wheels (currently branded with the #overachieve label) being developed by Giant.
“It was a long and hard TTT and we are both happy and disappointed with the performance,” said Kragh Andersen, who was also part of Team Sunweb squad that won gold last year in Norway. “It would have been nice to win again, but second is also a great result and we are happy about how we raced and proud of the achievement.”
The 62.8km course took riders from a waterpark in Ötztal to the city of Innsbruck, covering rolling terrain and a 4.6km climb with steep pitches of 10 percent about two-thirds of the way in. After conceding time early, the team powered over the climb, making up time to land the podium finish in the end.
“We showed that we really are one of the strongest teams and that we deserve to be amongst the best,” said Team Sunweb coach Adriaan Helmantel. “Quickstep did an amazing job today and coming second here is a great achievement for the team.”
The 2018 UCI Road World Championships continue this week in Innsbruck. Team Sunweb has several riders competing in the elite men’s individual time trial Wednesday, and the elite men’s road race on Sunday.
