Team BikeExchange-Jayco rider Lawson Craddock defended his U.S. men’s time trial championship, earning the right to wear the stars-and-stripes jersey for the second year in a row.

Craddock blitzed the 34.9km course near Knoxville, Tennessee, with a time of 40:39 on his Trinity Advanced Pro TT bike with a CADEX Aero WheelSystem. The 30-year-old pushed through hot temperatures, which hit 36 degrees Celsius (97 Fahrenheit) during the elite men’s race.

“I’m really happy and really proud to keep the jersey for another year,” said Craddock, who wore the Giant Rivet TT helmet to take the win. “It’s no secret that Team BikeExchange-Jayco have really stepped up all things time trialing this year, everyone on the team has really taken it to a whole new level, and I think this is a testament to the work we’ve put in with Giant, CADEX and our other partners.”

The course featured three laps of a mostly flat 11.6km circuit on the shores of Melton Lake, located about 30 minutes west of Knoxville. Craddock got stronger as the race wore on. After one lap he was 5 seconds off the leading pace of Ineos Grenadiers rider Magnus Sheffield. The Texas native made up 2 seconds on the second lap, and poured it on during the final lap to beat Sheffield by 4 seconds at the finish. George Simpson (Project Echelon Racing) finished third, 1:48 back, to earn the bronze medal.

“In the end it was a great battle with Magnus,” Craddock said. “He’s a really great rider with an incredibly promising future. I had to pull a few tricks out of the bag to squeak the win, but it’s a really exciting day for me and I’m really proud of what we, as a team, have accomplished.”
