Arndt Delivers First WorldTour Win of the Season!
Team Sunweb finished its early-season swing through Australia on a high-note, with sprinter Nikias Arndt scoring a major win at the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race. After a few near misses at the Tour Down Under stage race, the German speedster gave Team Sunweb its first WorldTour win of the 2017 season.
The hilly 174km circuit race, held in and around Geelong where the 2010 Road World Championships took place, produced a number of breakaways and a flurry of late-race attacks—but in the end it came down to the sprinters.
Team Sunweb coach Luke Roberts explained the strategy for the final circuit: “With such a difficult final lap we had to have two cards to play. We had Wilco [Kelderman] there to cover the moves on the climbs on the final lap. We also had Nikias there in case there was a slightly bigger group that came to the finish. In the end our plan with Nikias came through and he proved to have the fastest legs.”
Arndt, who beat rival sprinters Simons Gerrans and Cameron Meyer, both Australian, in the final sprint, gave credit to his teammates.
“The team did a truly awesome job,” said Arndt, who took the win riding his TCR Advanced SL team bike and wearing the Giant Rev helmet. “We had a good plan to cover different scenarios on the difficult final lap. I had to fight really hard to survive the final climbs and the guys made sure I was set up for the sprint. I am really happy to finish off the trip to Australia like this and pleased that I could reward the team with a win after all of their hard work over the past three weeks.”
