Andersen Wins Tour of Oman Stage 3!
Team Sunweb rider Søren Kragh Andersen won Stage 3 of the Tour of Oman Thursday, beating general classification leaders Ben Hermans and Rui Costa to the line on a hilltop finish in Quiriyat. The 22-year-old Dane, a second-year pro with Team Sunweb, powered his TCR Advanced SL team bike to his first-ever professional win at the six-day stage race through the Arabian Peninsula.
Andersen credited his team for protecting him and putting him in position on the final climb of the 162km stage. Team Sunweb coach Marc Reef said it was all part of the plan.
“We planned today to go for Søren and bring him into the best possible position going into the final climb of 2.5 kilometers," Reef said. "We knew that if we were able to put him with the first five riders into that last climb, he would have a chance of taking the victory.”
Riding his TCR Advanced SL and wearing the Giant Rev helmet, Andersen started his sprint 250 meters from the line, and held off his rivals to take the win.
“The team was amazing today,” Andersen said. “They delivered me to the bottom of the climb as fresh as possible. It was an incredible feeling to cross the line in first place. It was a day of great team effort and great legs, and one I will remember.”
