The Ironman 70.3 Geelong kicked off the Oceania calendar in Australia over the weekend and Giant-sponsored athletes were at the front of the action, scoring three of the top-five finishing spots in a competitive elite men's race that also counted as the Australian long course championship.

Sam Appleton, Tim Van Berkel and Matt Burton, all racing with their Trinity Advanced Pro bikes, finished second, third and fifth respectively. Appleton got off to a strong start in the 1.2-mile swim, coming out of the water first, just ahead of fellow Australian Josh Amberger. The 28-year-old then powered his Trinity Advanced Pro featuring a CADEX WheelSystem to the fastest split of the day on the 56-mile ride.

Appleton hit the 13.1-mile run with a slim lead over Amberger, and the two fought to the finish with Amberger taking the win by just 31 seconds. Van Berkel, also riding the Trinity Advanced Pro with CADEX Wheels, finished a strong third to take the final podium spot.

“It was the first race of the year and a good test to see where the body is at,” Appleton said. “I can now head back to training and use this as a launching pad into my next races. I had the fastest swim and bike, which is reassuring that my training for those disciplines is on track. I now just need to bring my run leg up a little as we head into the next race, which will be the Oceanside 70.3 in California in April.”

Van Berkel also said he was pleased with his finish, especially his run, which was fastest among the pro men. “My day started out a little rough, but it got better as the day went on,” he said. “The form is ticking over nicely and I’m happy to kick off the 2020 season with a podium at the Australian long course championship.”
